We have lots of things to contend with living here in the desert, including scorpions and rattlesnakes. I have been taking solo hikes in the park over the last year and only had one close encounter with a rattlesnake. I did see one crossing the road as I was driving out of the park a few weeks ago, so I was able to take this photo from a safe distance:
Yesterday morning I came into the living room to find my kitty Dihedral hovering over a small scorpion that had found its way inside the house. These little bark scorpions are actually quite potent and since they are so small, they can easily squeeze under doors and through cracks. Luckily I intercepted before Dihedral got stung, but I watched over her for an hour to make sure she didn't display any symptoms. I had captured the scorpion in a plastic container and then released it right after taking this photo:
